BSNL helpline service to find the location of the mobile number for Uttarakhand disaster June 2013

Peoples are frenetically looking for their relatives and now after 7 days with each passing hour and deteriorating weather, the possibilities of finding more live peoples stranded and safe in Uttarakhand Tsunami is going down. State government is yet to update anything regarding such information on their websites till now.

Everyone wishes that the scale and intensity of relief operation which we could see only on Saturday onwards could have been started at least 3-4 days back with the same intensity and urgency. That could have saved many more lives.

News channels are also busy just doing rhetorical coverage and system bashing and gobbling Helicopter space for the TRP news. Why not they work to go live with the photos and full details (I could see only ZEE news doing a bit of this) of those affected rather than repeating the same videos and trailer again and again. They can be of great help if they coordinate with the various control rooms at different locations and then let the people come on live coverage exclusively for the identification and tracking.

There is urgent need for a centralized data system for the lost and dead ones and the saved ones to minimize the chaotic situation. In midst of this Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has started its own service.

If someone know to you is trapped somewhere in the Uttarakhand then you can use the service started by BSNL to track the locations of the mobile number of your relative or acquaintances. At least that can give the last location of the mobile number and perhaps the person you are looking for.

Service/Helpline number of BSNL to track the mobile number (for the customers of Uttarakhand) – 1503

For the customers of other services (Airtel, Idea Vodafone, Uninor, Reliance etc) and from other states- 09412024365

How the BSNL Helpline will work or how to use it?
You will have to tell the BSNl or MTNL number by calling on these numbers and then the last location of the concerned number will be sent to you via SMS within one hour (as quoted from newspaper)

Time of the service: 8 am to 10 pm

Hope others may also start this kind of service. And we will update any related information here.

Other service you can use to find someone in danger or lost in the Uttarakhand disaster
The government is also said to be updating lost and found information on this site.

Find persons/relatives with the “Google Person Finder” and “SMS” trapped in disaster in Uttarakhand.2013

Sitting at home on computer, reading newspapers, calling/listening phones and asking well being of the acquaintances, the hovering clouds above is not giving a good feeling. Hope that the clouds that are again spreading over for rain should not have come at this time. The Meteorological forecast is predicting heavy rains again within 48 hours. More helicopters are now seen over the skies.  Hope the brave Jawans and air force will save as many peoples as they can before something untoward happen again. They are the only hope for the hapless peoples at this time.

Though we cannot help those trapped peoples directly and perhaps as of the most of peoples are not using internet, and the batteries of mobile might have exhausted by now for some trapped and untraced ones, but even than as most if the peoples affected with the disaster in Uttarakhand are looking for their dear and near ones. So here is one initiative from Google which we got from internet.

Google has started this service where you can type in the name of missing person to find that person by name or you can tell about someone you have or had seen during the disaster at Kedarnath temple or anywhere else alive or dead.

Click here to visit the Google People Finder lost in Uttarakhand flood and landslide.

There is also SMS service where you can type in “Search person-name.”  For example -search Mukesh. And then send to the number 9 77 33 00 000

Dead bodies are now coming through the water of Ganga River in Rishikesh and Haridwar. One can contact the official or Police about their whereabouts and identification.

Although you can use helpline numbers given in below link for more help. Though they might be doing their best but even then they may not be in position to tell the exact and required information.

Check the BSNL service to find peoples through locating their mobile number of trapped persons at various places.

One advise to the peoples is that don’t try to visit those places in hurry through land route (still broken at many places) for any reason (even for searching you relatives) at this time as you may risk your own life and also hamper the rescue operation.

I am still thinking in such situation how “Google Map” and direction services can be helpful and for whom?

We will paste any such information if we could get.

Part-2: Land of God is facing ire of God! Is development activities cause of this? An overview of disaster in Uttarakhand due to rain in June 2013

Click here to read the previous part ….and making hullabaloo to irrationally stop the much needed projects for state development and employment directly or indirectly.
There has to be balanced approach and those affected must be taken into confidence before taking any decision. It is easier to waste public money in projects and then suddenly stop it for politics.
Imagine if money had been there from their own pocket, no one would have taken such topsy-turvy decisions. That Allahabad person was sleeping earlier and now crying foul.

For one; decision for Uttarakhand peoples must be by our peoples not outsiders.

It should not be based on the whims and fancies of so called ‘Saints’ from outside who even don’t know the ground realities and problems being faced by the local peoples.

See if local peoples can be taken into confidence then they can be of much help during such devastation also. Perhaps they are more aware of those cracks in the mountains, part of land about to slide or dangerous turns prone to accidents, coming “Gaderas”, safety places besides other help in case of disasters.

Perhaps administration could engage local youth and volunteers (even pay them for this as one can get many unemployed youth in our state) as guide and help at different places on the whole route and camps during start of the Pilgrim seasons or after any such calamity (landslide, earthquake etc.). They can be given basic training and material for such situations beforehand.

I would like to quote Sri Dev Suman, who in a conference (1938) in Srinagar attended by the likes of Pandit Nehru and Vijayalakshmi Pandit has emphasized the concept of unity of Garhwal when he said that-
“Agar Ganga Humari Maa hokar bhi hume apas me milane ke bajaye do hisson me bantati hai to hum Ganga ko kat denge”
If river Ganga, in the capacity of a mother divides us into two parts rather joining us then we will cut Ganga apart
.
The literal meaning of the quote can be very upsetting but not going into that the thing is economic development, stopping migration, creating employment  in  is caused by “Electricity, Roads and Water” in layman’s language. And all these have some repercussions which can be minimized and managed with proper pre planning and maintenance and timely action.

Environmentalist and scientist can sit over and rather only pasting gloomy picture must contemplate on some middle path. It is easier to criticize (like I do most of the time here) than suggest some practical concrete measures.

A kind of sustainable development is need of ours. Cost benefit analysis approach is needed not only in the monetary terms but in terms of social and cultural perspective.

The views expressed here are personal and not intended to hurt anyone personally and last but not least- your comments are solicited.

Land of God is facing ire of God! Is development activities cause of this? An overview of disaster in Uttarakhand due to rain in June 2013

As the newspapers, TV channels are showing images and sad news from different part of the state. Images of damaged Kedarnath shrine on one side gives feeling that God was in no mood to forgive anyone except its own temple and few peoples. One can see flying Helicopters above in the sky, situation looks bad and deep reading of newspapers and inputs from the lucky peoples coming from the dangers zones at different places but what hurts more is the aftermath and the mismanagement after the disaster

Bad picture:
Very fist thing is that there is no conclusive data and report on who died and who are trapped and where. You are watching news everywhere but each claims different data with regard to the disaster. Though, it is quite obvious that this is a difficult task in the mountainous and jungle area and more so in the panic state of after effect of disaster.

Some reports claim death toll as 180 and around 70000 stranded at different places. Given the calamity and the delay in the relief mangement by the system, the toll will be much higher. Government data as you know never tell the real picture.

But the question is why there is no accurate data of who has gone for the Char Dham Yatra or who has entered those places?

Does this a new event in Uttarakhand? Pilgrims comes every year and the disasters can happen anytime in the sensitive Himalayan zone and it is known to everyone.

News like CM Bahuguna scolding lady MLA and advising media not to blow thing out of proportion (when even buses and big vehicles are not being traceable he was perhaps of the view that nothing is serious!)

PM and the most powerful lady of India just doing rubbish useless air tours and then doing announcements (how much of this would perhaps reach the affected is always issue of debate in our system).

Delay in the distribution and carriage of the necessary material for the relief purpose.
No one seems to be in-charge of the rescue operation, just passing the buck from one department to another and one official to another.
Helicopter carrying the politicians and officers rather than the army personnel who are dearly wanted for the relief operations.

Peoples raising slogans against the visiting CM and other high profilers of the Uttarakhand state.
I read in one newspaper that when some excited local youth somewhere in those affected areas tried to rope in a coming Helicopter for supply of some material. The pilot bluntly said (as quoted from the newspaper) that this Helicopter is exclusively reserved for Saket Bahuguna (son of CM)
Hope that the hovering Helicopters above in sky are saving those hapless peoples only!

Reports also claimed some selfish businessman fleecing peoples with increased prices of the necessary goods.

Looking into images of broken road and people stranded on both side. Why these roads snap so easily and almost regularly? Don’t those engineers foresee such eventuality while making them? Do they really use good material for building those roads? Have they designed proper safety of the roads on both sides? Well there are exceptional areas but believe me if the questions of above answers are satisfactory. Road block and broken images will be minimized to some extent.

Mind you the picture can be gloomier in the coming months as this was just trailer of the monsoon. Hope the Yatris will be out of danger by that time. But what about those native peoples of Uttarakhand who face the danger every year.

Good Picture:
Some good pictures include the Army Jawans, NDMA or NDRF teams and ITBP Jawans helping out peoples and some local peoples helping the deceased and trapped peoples.

Man and material for relief operation and money pouring in from different states (though it is still to be seen how that much money is practically reach the needy ones; yes you got it what I want to say).

It was touching to read peoples calling in from far cities e.g. Dubai and extending helping hands.

So after enough bashing of the system and its functioning now come to our own peoples

See as the images of the Ganga, Yamuna, Bhilangana, Asiganga, or other rivers just clearing the encroachment on its sides. The image of Hotel or Dharamshala falling in Uttarkashi, and the image of a temple being run over by the river water compel me to think whether they were established after proper clearance of the laws and safety?  I bet the answer will be –“no”. But here again what the hell those authorities were doing when such construction work was going on there?

There is beautiful and calm Marine drive near by Ganga River in Rishikesh. Have you taken a stroll over there especially in the evening? You will be mesmerized. You know that High court has banned any type of commercial construction near 200 Ft of the river bank. But you can see many perhaps illegal constructions within that demarcation.

In fact now some temples are constructed for encroachment of land.

Above are only few examples, there are many more such examples.

Peoples (of course not all of those) coming out from outside mostly from Delhi, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, etc. are mostly seen as nuisance by the native peoples (specially those coming for Kanwar Yatra) because of their eerie driving and littering habit and sometimes creating mischievous activities.
Most of those road jams during this season are handiwork of few errands (who need to be taught and treated well by Police!)

Picnic and pilgrimage are or should be little different thing. Isn’t it?

Pilgrims are supposed to be more sincere and behaving.

Spiritualism and commercialization are way apart. The camaraderie of both of them in today’s scenario (where some even sell God), they can’t go hand in hand for long. Spiritualism has to have an upper hand for the sake of both spiritualism and commercialization. However what constitutes spiritualism is altogether a different issue.
What is your say?
Heavy philosophical though Uh!

Though I don’t mean that some one from other states sitting in the AC rooms and then suddenly coming to gain publicity in the name of spiritualism… Read further
